Torrance Fisting - January 1998 Report

by Stefan Vincent
January 11, 1998

Eight people playing this time, like so:

Frank   - Hand
Tim M.  - Peacock "Major Deck of Suckage" (renamed after the game)
Corey B.- Dragons "Roll Over"
Stefan  - Architects/Jammers "Whoops"
Ray     - Architects/Dragons/Hand/Lotus
Garrett - Dragons "Face Off"
Matt    - Architects/Monarchs "Pink Power Ranger"
Jeff    - Architects/Monarchs "The It's-A-Kind-Of-Event-Deck"
Round 1
Architects popular as usual, and the strange no-Ascended phenomena continuing as Lissa, Tim D., and Caroline again do not show. Two games of 4 each per round. First round timed out. With Tim and I stalling badly at our table (and hence being whupping boys), Corey and Frank went back-and-forth a bit, with Corey winning on the tiebreak. The folks at the other table were all pretty close, going all the way to the 3rd tiebreak rule to decide a winner. Scores after the first round:
Matt (1) 7 Corey (1) 7
Jeff     6 Frank     4
Garrett  5 Tim       2
Ray      3 Stefan    1
Round 2
Second round brought Ray down to the kiddie table, and Corey went to play with the big boys. Clean wins at both tables this time - the Dragons prove too much for the Monarchitects boys, and Garrett takes the win. Frank's Hand deck whups us at the kiddie table, where Tim and I (again) have stalled. Tim and I end the game so completely tied that we have to split the points. Scores after the second round:
Garrett (1) 14 Frank (1) 13
Jeff        11 Ray        8
Matt        11 Tim        5.5
Corey   (1)  8 Stefan     4.5
Round 3
Frank takes Corey's place at the head table. Again the game times out, leaving Matt in the lead at the head table. Kiddie table goes all the way to the 3rd tiebreaker, leaving me (!) ahead by 1 at the kiddie table (worst possible thing that could have happened, from everyone else's perspective - if anybody else had won, we wouldn't have needed a semifinal). My deck actually worked, a little, although it looked like the Jammer half was on vacation. Tim, alas, was still stalling. Hence the name change for his deck. Scores now:
Matt    (2) 18 Stefan (1) 11.5
Garrett (1) 19 Corey  (1) 14
Frank   (1) 17 Ray        12
Jeff        14 Tim         8.5
Semifinal
With a tie for 4th place, Matt, Garrett, and Frank sat out while the next four folks played a semi-final, winner advancing to the finals. This game was pretty lame. My Burn Baby Burn got burnin' early, but due to some odd Whirlpool action from Ray (hey, I'm writing this, so I can badmouth whoever I want :), my City Square was having a hard time moving the damage around, leaving a nice Rust Garden with 1 Body (after the Napalm Sunrise) for Jeff's Darkness Priestess and Test Subjects to scoot in and take it for the win. The biggest character that popped out during the entire game was Ray's Brain Sucker. Hmm. Anyway, Jeff moved on to the finals, while the rest of us losers played some fun games.

Final
The final started really slow, and took almost two hours to finish. I don't really know what happened, since I was busy playing for fun, but in the end, Jeff came up with the win. Congratulations, Jeff!

Jeff    - win $30
Matt    - 2nd $15
Frank   - 3rd $10
Garrett - 4th zippo
