Novel Ideas - June 1997 Report

by Rick Ford
June 6, 1997

Every month at Novel Ideas we are running Shadowfist tournaments - send email to rickford@grove.ufl.edu or joechip@atlantic.net for details on future events.

At the June tournament, we had a slightly smaller turnout than expected - only 9 people showed up. On the plus side, 9 players means easy to arrange 3 player games. We played 4 Swiss-like rounds of 3 player games followed by the finals. In the preliminary rounds, Rick's Final Brawls and Whirlpools paved the way Mad Dog and Ting Ting to do what they do best while Bill continued to abuse The Hungry and the Vivisector for absurd numbers of huge hitters. Tom's Crib-Badhair-Brawl-Baptism-Baptism-Baptism tricks made many sites go away :) Ray again made it to the finals with his 250 cards of death - we're still not sure how he does it. Details on these matches will be posted at the end of this article.

Scores going into Finals:

         Games BFV      The Decks

Rick F.      4 8        Dragons/Chi with splash of Hand
Tom L.       2 7        Dragons with minor Jammers and Chi
Bill A.      1 8        Architect/Lotus
Ray B.       1 7        7 Factions. 250 cards. Go figure...
Camille T.   1 6        Architect/Lotus
John G.      1 6        Architect with minor Lotus and Jammers
Shawn B.     1 4        Architect/Jammers
Tyson ?      1 4        Dragon/Jammers
Paul B.      0 4        Architects
After 4 rounds of play, the top 4 players play in the only game the matters. The winner of this game gets 1st prize, the top scorer other than the winner gets a smaller consolation prize. Based on the attendance - this weeks prizes were $16 & $5.

Finals:

Rick, Tom, Ray, Bill
Rick gets out of the gate pretty quickly to burn a site for victory with Mad Dog who is terminated in short order by Tom's really pissed off Rocket Scientist with a Homemade Tank. That Scientist shortly gets 2 Baptism of Fire's, a Claw of the Dragon and a Fortune of the Turtle. Bill mistakenly stopps Ray from taking a site from Tom, and Rick can't draw anything out of his deck, so the Rocket Scientist from Hell roars on unimpeded to victory. Tom is pleased at the vindication of the Jammers - claiming victory in their name :)
Overall, everyone seemed to play quite well, and have a good time. I really enjoyed seeing how quickly the "new blood" are improving. If anyone is interested, I'll put up the my Dragon/Chi deck in a separate post.
