Gamex 1997 - Report

Hey All,
Welcome to the new folks on the mailing list! Sorry for the delay, but I was on vacation last week.

Matt ended up running two tournaments at Gamex (Sunday's was scrubbed). The Friday night tournament had 5 players, which ended with a one-on-one match between Tim's straight Ascended deck and Lissa playing my Burnin' For You Hand/Lotus deck (intended for 5+ players). Needless to say, Tim won. But he should have won faster than he did...

Saturday's tournament was better attended, starting with 10 players but David dropped out (sorry you didn't feel well David; we'll kick your butt next time). The initial draw put all four Ascended decks (3 straight - Jason, Kevin, and Lissa - and Matt's Ascended/Architects) together; that game went for hours (the rest of us had plenty of time to go to the card auction while we waited for them to finish). Jason's power Ascended deck took that first round after everyone swapped characters back and forth ("Mr. X takes control of Dunwa, who takes control of Might. Oh yeah, well I Shadowy Mentor Mr. X, who takes control of Dunwa, who takes control of Might. Oh yeah, well....). In the other games, Flaine's (Eric/Kevin, please correct me - I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong) borrowed straight Architects deck beat down Conrad and David (which decks were you guys playing, anyway?). Much to my suprise, my Dragons/Lotus Ace in the Hole (Who's the Big Man Now/Glimpse of the Abyss) deck took Eric's straight Jammers and Mike N.'s Hand/Architect. Jason pressed his advantage in the winner's round and managed to convince Flaine that I was the dangerous target :) so he also took the second round win by Shadowy Mentoring Flaine's CHARs.
Lissa's straight Ascended deck took her second round against Matt and Eric, and Mike N.'s Hand/Architects deck took his second round against Kevin and Conrad. Third round was all five winners, with Jason sitting pretty - if he won, he won the tournament; if he lost, he still wouldn't be eliminated and there would be a one-on-one playoff. Jason and Flaine both took a beating; Flaine not getting the cards he needed to get going, and Jason being shut down on the third turn by Mike's Fox Outfoxed. Mike's deck played surprisingly well considering that he never drew an Architects resource :).
Lissa managed to pull off the win, and it was straight Ascended vs. straight Ascended in the final. Jason's power deck got rolling; with his back row full of Trade Centers and a Secret Headquarters he just played more cards than Lissa and took the win after quite a fight.

So, what's next? I spoke with the folks at We Be Games in Chatsworth and they're interested in having a demo done in their store and have several players up that way; I haven't called Shawn there yet but I'm thinking maybe later this month if it's ok with them. Matt will talk to Jose/Maria to see if we can get Daedalus to send us some free stuff for the demo (always worth asking....). Anyone else have a location to volunteer?

No news on Throne Wars yet; Jose is keeping tight-lipped as usual (which could mean anything). There was a brief announcement about a potential Shadowfist newsletter on the 'net, but I haven't seen anything since; Matt did you ever hear back from Jose about that?

That's it for this installment. Happy Butt-Kicking!
