Flashpoint Finchley XI - Report

July 23, 1997

There was a fair turnover of players showing for the monthly Flashpoint Finchley but the overall numbers held firm at 16. The following table shows details of the players and their decks. This table is best viewed with a fixed pitch font. Note that players were encouraged to bring a theme deck and, where they did so, the theme designator is shown. Otherwise, the general concept of the deck is indicated where known.

I was playing myself throughout and so didn't have much opportunity to see the other games. What follows is thus a fairly dry account of the results of each game. There were some general points of interest though. Firstly, there was a large number of Dragon/Architect decks - 10 decks with Dragons and 9 decks with Architects. No other factions came close to this popularity but, despite this, the Lotus did it again. Arthur's winning deck was a Eunuch theme deck based on Imperial Boon. Such decks have been tried before but Arthur seems to have come up with a winning recipe. It included our old friend, The Thing with 1000 Tongues, whose winning streak has now lasted 6 months!
So congratulations to Arthur on his first tournament victory. Now here are the blow by blow results.

Here is a summary of round 1:
Anil Das-Gupta beat Yuit Sum Vong, Tom Kassel and Martin Higham
Arthur Howlin beat Andy Holt, Steve Biggs and Nithiyan Thiruudaian
Jon Pickles beat Ron Wheelhouse, Bill Dawbarn and Robert Lee
Steve Salmon beat Hedley Coppock, Andrew Davidson and Daniel Vandenburg

The results from round 2 were:
Andy Holt beat Ron Wheelhouse, Anil Das-Gupta and Andrew Davidson
Arthur Howlin beat Tom Kassel, Bill Dawbarn and Hedley Coppock
Robert Lee beat Steve Salmon, Martin Higham and Nithiyan Thiruudaian
Jon Pickles beat Yuit Sum Vong, Daniel Vandenberg and Steve Biggs

Again we had two double winners and the other 4 single winners played a semi-final to see who would join them in the final. The result was that:

Robert Lee beat Steve Salmon, Andy Holt and Anil Das-Gupta

Meanwhile the result of the three consolation games was that:
Ron Wheelhouse beat Steve Biggs, Tom Kassel and Daniel Vandenberg
Andrew Davidson beat Jonathan Pickles, Nithiyan Thiruudaian and Bill Dawbarn
Martin Higham beat Yuit Sum Vong, Arthur Howlin and Hedley Coppock

The result of the final was that:
Arthur Howlin beat Robert Lee and Jonathan Pickles

Arthur's No Balls was the clear outright winning theme deck. There was also an extra game to see which was the best of the other winning theme decks. Martin Higham's Worship should by rights have been in this but he left before it was arranged and so Yuit stood in for him.
The result was that:
Andrew Davidson beat Yuit Sum Vong, Andy Holt and Steve Salmon.
