Gencon® 1999
Andrew Davidson, Stefan
Vincent and Michael Nickoloff
are working together to plan numerous Shadowfist events at this year's
Gencon. We have received notification from Andon that the events are in
the pre-registration booklet, but riddled with errors. (not surprisingly)
If you have any questions, please email us!

Whirlpool of Blood
This is a sealed booster draft format. Competitors will be provided
product (1 starter and 1 booster from each set) for play. After a
brief amount of time to review the starter, the players will be organized
into a big circle. Notice will be given, and each player opens the
first booster. The players will be given 20 seconds to review the
pack and draft 1 (one) card. The players then put the pack face down,
and when time is called, they pass the pack to the next player. Drafting
continues until the pack is exhausted. The next pack is then opened and
repeated until all cards are drafted. Drafting will go left, right,
left. The competitors will then be given another 20 minutes to construct
a deck of any size.
This is a multiplayer sealed tournament. (3, 4 or 5 person tables with
4 player final) Product will be provided. We are still unsure
if
we are allowing competitors to furnish their own product. Demos and
teaching sessions will be provided beforehand. This is the best place to
learn Shadowfist and jump head-first into the Secret War!
-
Final Brawl
This is it; the major tournament of 1999! If you want bragging
rights as The Man, come win this tournament! Be prepared for
hard-hitting game play, fast action and a whole slew of deck types and
concepts.
This is a multiplayer constructed tournament. (3, 4 or 5 person tables
with 4 player final) Please bring your own deck and be familiar with
all the rules. This is an advanced level tournament; beginners allowed
but could be overwhelmed with the action and strategies involved!
-
Who's the Man?
Even though Who's the Man? is not P.C. (Who's the Woman?),
this format definitely allows equal opportunity butt kicking! Bring
your best dueling deck (2 player) and prepare to shape the Secret War into
your desires!
This is a dueling constructed tournament. (2 player) Please bring your
own deck and be ready to play. Be familiar with all the rules and dueling
deck design. (Comeback potential/cards is a major focus!) This is an expert
level tournament.
-
Last Stand
"Isn't Mountain Retreat a coaster? Why are you playing with Mysterious
Stranger? I can't believe you're playing with that card!" Those excerpt
are overheard when people come upon a RetroFist game! Andrew Davidson
and the London gang have reworked and retooled many existing cards that
are sub-par or under-powered. By adding new abilities to the cards,
the rules give cards a second chance for fame and a new taste of Shadowfist.
Full details of RetroFist cards are available at Andrew's web
page.
This is a multiplayer constructed tournament. (3, 4 or 5 person tables)
Please bring your own deck and be ready to kick butt! This is an
intermediate level tournament; beginners welcomed as well!
General Tournament Notes
We are still ironing out many of the details of the tournaments themselves.
However, here are a few basic guidelines that you can follow:
-
Cost
Andon charges the tournament players for an event; we do not
get any of the money! The 4 hour tournaments will be $2.50 and the
6 hour tournament will cost $5.00.
-
Tournament Rules
There are a few published rules on the web: Daedalus'
Official Rules, SoCal
Rules and London Rules. We are unsure what rules to use at this
moment.
-
Judges
We are planning to run a 3-judge system. A game that needs a
ruling will ask a judge from another game; this allows all interested parties
to enjoy the Shadowfist competition.
-
Time Limits
The slots are hampered by Andon's time limits, and the playing tables
will probably be used for other events during other time slots. So, we
must enforce time limits on all tournaments. (excluding the final of a
tournament) We hate to end a game prematurely, but we must keep the
tournament moving in a timely manner.
-
Collusion
All types of collusion will be prohibited: cheating, throwing games,
excessive kingmaker, and points shaving.
-
Stalling
Stalling is prohibited. All players will have the opportunity
to make lengthy decision during a game, but premeditated stalling is grounds
for disqualification. However, playing a turtle deck will just make
some of us call you, "Turtle!" A lot. :>
-
Prizes
Andon furnishes cheap-o-rama certificates for winners. (dunno if it's
just first place or whatnot) We're bringing ribbons for sure.
We're going to find some neat-o Shadowfist cards for prizes as well. Also,
we're looking into some super-secret prizes too!
-
Fun
You will have a great time! (not guaranteed. However, winning a tournament
sure helps the fun factor)
Last Year's Winners
Beware, these are the few that stood above the rest and molded the past
and the present into their wishes in 1998. However, they will need to come
back and defend themselves; the future is still up for grabs in 1999!

FAQ
-
When is Gencon 1999?
August 5-9, 1999.
-
Where is Gencon 1999?
Milwaukee, WI.
-
How much does it cost?
Its $50 for pre-reg. I'd assume it would cost more at the door.
-
Why are you charging for the tournaments?
Because we can! No, really, Andon charges the players. They get
all the money.
-
Hey, the Godzilla blow-pops from last year were neat, but how 'bout
some 'Fist prizes?
Ronin donated some stuff as well! Anyway, we're looking into signed
cards, rarer cards and some secret-stuff.
-
Is the pre-reg book wrong?
Yes. Here are the latest problems:
-
Last Stand is listed incorrectly at 1:00 am, not 10:00 am.
-
I'm a beginning player, how do I play/get started?
E-mail us and we'll shower you with cards. Or, just show up 30
min before the tournament and we'll demo it to you.
-
What's up with Jose?
Who's Jose? Oh, that guy. If he ever stuck his head outside,
I'd bet he'd be swarmed in an instant!
-
There are many Doomtown players too! Are you scheduling the tournaments
at the same time like last year?
Nope. Thanks to some high level connections, we have the Doomtown schedule
right here:
-
Thursday, 10 am Basic Constructed
-
Thursday, 4 pm A Reaping of Souls pre-release
-
Friday, 4 pm A Reaping of
Souls pre-release
